Strategy Four To foster a culture for educational upliftment amongst workers and their children
The export enterprise scholarship scheme provides scholarships to best ranked children of EPZ workers at CPE exams and to those who receive admission at the University of Mauritius and Industrial/Vocational Training Institutions. During the period 1990 to 1998, 528 scholarships were allocated to children of workers. The latter benefitted from monthly stipends from form one to seven and when admitted to the University of Mauritius. Examination fees for the refund of S.C, H.S.C, tertiary education at the University of Mauritius and Industrial/Vocational Training are further refunded. During the plan period 220 additional sholarships will be allocated for secondary education. Given the greater access of children of EPZ workers to tertiary education in Mauritius and to Industrial/Vocational training courses the number of scholarships will be increased from 5 to 10 per year for both tertiary education and Industrial/Vocational training.
A documentation centre was set up in February 1995 with a view to provide EPZ workers and children engaged in educational pursuit with reading and research opportunities. During the plan period a Book Loan Scheme will be introduced and integrated into the documentation service. During 1999 the prospect of having the centre relayed to the INTERNET will be further examined for onward implementation.
Under the Examination Loan Scheme interest free loans were granted to parents for the payment of S.C. and H.S.C. fees or equivalent examinations in respect of their wards. During the plan period it is envisaged to span the repayment for such loans over 18 instead of 12 months.
