Strategy Five To increase accessibility and affordability of nutritionally balanced food through setting up in industrial zones of a canteen infrastructure and system founded on Eat Fit/Stay Fit
A study conducted in 1988 on the EPZ workers revealed two major nutritional problems in the free zone, namely (i) A lack of time to prepare balanced and nutritious food at home, and (ii) Unavailability of reliably, healthy, nutritious food at affordable prices at the workplace. Very few factories provide canteen infrastructure with balanced and affordable food facilities. The proper feeding habit of massive number of workers in an industrial set up usually causes problems which have to be tackled in a coordinated and systematic way. There is a need to improve the nutritional status of EPZ workers through availability of nutritious food. In 1996, following an informal survey conducted in the region of Mangalkhan/Floreal, the need to put up a modern canteen infrastructure for some 5000 workers from Floreal Knitwear, Shibani Knitting, Mauriden, Intarsia Knits and BDC Plastics was felt. A portion of stateland has been put at the disposal of the Fund and the Fund will soon embark on the contracting and operating of a model canteen.
