At
this point, it is proper to look back on the League’s past to convince
one and all that its future must be guaranteed.
The
League has been a meeting place for youths, for members of the present
generation, for boys and girls. It has helped to supplement the formal
school education by a varied range of extra-mural and character building
activities: scouting, drama, sports and games, debating and other literary
pursuits, fancy fairs, fashion shows, cookery, tamil classes for adults
– to mention only a few. It has helped in the moulding of several
generations of our youth. Many are its members who have contributed to the
progress of Mauritius in different walks of life.
Reflecting
the open-mindedness and enterprising spirit of the community, the League
has contributed in no small measure to the emancipation of women in our
country.
It
is not possible to list all the achievements of the League, certain
landmarks deserve to be highlighted. The League has regularly participated
in the Mauritius Youth Drama Festival in the 50’s and 60’s and won
most of the awards of this festival. It has produced the first Woodbadge
in scouting; at one time three Queen’s Scouts received their awards
during the same presentation ceremony. It was reckoned as one of the best
debating clubs of Port-Louis and had the honour of representing the Town
of Port-Louis in many competitions. On the cultural level, it gave a warm
welcome to numerous eminent personalities well versed in Tamil Culture.
Free private tuitions to under-privileged children were one of the few
remarkable activities which marked the history of the League for the past
two decades.
To
crown this long record of service and brotherwood the League celebrated
with pomp, its Golden Jubilee throughout the year 1987. In this context
the League received Dr Sivagnanam, a well-known exponent of Tamil Culture
and the late and internationally applauded Sirghazi Govindarajen. For the
occasion, the League presented the “ Anklet”, a play based on
Sillapaddikaram by Illango, a poet and writer of the 8th
century.
After
the inauguration of its new social hall and premises, the League renewed
with some of its activities and introduced new ones to meet social
changing needs. A great highlight remains its Annual Dinner, held on a
regular basis. Now it looks forward to celebrating its 65th
Anniversary as from February
2002 next year.
